The movement hierarchy: first steps and stops, not sprints
The most common misunderstanding about tennis fitness is treating it as a running sport. Almost no movement on a tennis court is a straight-line sprint. The court is small; the distances are a few meters; what decides whether you arrive in balance is first-step quickness — reacting and exploding off the split step — and, just as important, deceleration: the ability to slam on the brakes, load, and stop in a strong hitting position. Players who cannot decelerate float through the ball, hit off balance, and recover late. In training terms this means short explosive work, braking and landing mechanics, and split-step timing matter far more than 400-meter repeats.
Agility and change of direction
A hard point involves a chain of direction changes — wide, recover, short, back, wide again — each demanding a plant, a hip turn, and re-acceleration. Change of direction is a skill layered on strength: you need the leg and trunk strength to absorb the plant, and the footwork patterns to redirect it instantly. Agility work should look like tennis — reactive, unpredictable, in tennis-length distances — rather than choreographed ladder routines a player can do half-asleep. The test of good agility training is simple: does it require the athlete to read something before they move?
The aerobic base: for the third hour, and the heat
Tennis points are anaerobic bursts, but tournaments are aerobic events. A junior in Florida may play two three-set matches in a day in 90-degree heat, and the player with the bigger engine is not just fresher — they think better, because decision-making is the first thing fatigue degrades. The aerobic base is also what lets a player absorb heavy training weeks and recover between them. It is unglamorous work, and it is non-negotiable for anyone with ambitions beyond local events.
Rotational power: the serve and forehand come from the ground
Big serves and heavy forehands are not arm shots. Power starts at the ground — legs drive, hips rotate, trunk transfers, and the arm arrives last, fast and loose. That kinetic chain is a physical quality you can train: leg drive, hip mobility and hip strength, rotational core power through movements like medicine-ball throws. A player who tries to add pace with the arm alone gets a small gain and, sooner or later, a sore shoulder or elbow. A player who learns to produce force from the ground gets a bigger gain and a healthier arm.
Flexibility, mobility, and staying on court
The best physical program in the world is worthless if the player is injured. Mobility — in the hips, thoracic spine, shoulders, and ankles — is what allows the extreme positions tennis demands, from a wide slide on clay to a full service rotation, without the body compensating somewhere fragile. Flexibility and mobility work is injury prevention you do in advance, and in juniors going through growth spurts it needs constant attention, because a body that grew four inches in a year has different levers than it did last season.
Coordination and balance: the foundation under everything
Underneath all of it sit coordination and balance — the general athletic qualities that let a player learn any new movement quickly. Hand-eye coordination, rhythm, spatial awareness, the ability to stay balanced through contact while everything else is moving. These are built broadly, especially young, and they are a large part of why the best long-term prospects are usually good all-around athletes first. They are also a big piece of what makes a good tennis player overall — movement and learning speed predict more than any stroke.
Age-appropriate development: athletes first
A word of caution for parents of young juniors: do not put a 10-year-old on an adult strength program. Early specialization in heavy weights is the wrong sequence — young athletes gain far more from broad athletic variety, and they build it more safely.
- Younger juniors: general athleticism — multiple sports and games, running, jumping, throwing, climbing, balance work, bodyweight strength, and lots of coordination-rich play. This is when the movement vocabulary is built, and it transfers to tennis for life.
- Early adolescence: learn the movements before loading them — squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, rotate, land — with body weight and light resistance, plus growing attention to mobility as the growth spurt hits.
- Older juniors: now progressive strength and power training earns its place, built on the foundation above, alongside tennis-specific speed, agility, and conditioning that matches the demands of the competitive schedule.
How a serious program puts it together
Physical development cannot be an afterthought bolted onto court time — it has to be planned alongside it, so the hard conditioning does not land the day before a tournament and the strength work supports what the player is building technically. Whoever delivers it for your player, the test is the same: is the physical work periodized around competition, appropriate for the player's age and growth stage, and connected to what they are developing on court? For players aiming at a professional pathway, the physical side is not optional support work — at that level, everyone can hit; the bodies decide who is still standing in the third set of the third round.
