Saviano vs IMG Academy: two philosophies of development

Families comparing these two academies are not really comparing two brands — they are comparing two philosophies of how a junior tennis player develops. One says: build the most complete institution possible and let the player grow inside it. The other says: put one master coach in charge of one player's development and arrange everything else around that. Both philosophies produce excellent players. This page lays out the differences so you can decide which one fits your child.

Scale: the institution vs the boutique

IMG Academy in Bradenton is the descendant of Nick Bollettieri's 1978 operation, and today it is a full multi-sport boarding school — hundreds of athletes across several sports, on-campus academics, dorms, and sports science on one campus. The scale is the point: it delivers a completeness no small program can, and its Bollettieri-era history (Agassi, Seles, Courier trained there) gives it a pedigree no one questions.

Saviano HPT in Davie is the opposite bet. It is a boutique built around one coach: Nick Saviano — nine years on the ATP Tour, fifteen years as a USTA Director of Coaching, author of Maximum Tennis, the primary developmental coach Sloane Stephens started with at age 10 — designs every player's program personally and is typically on court daily. The academy stays small on purpose, because the product is his attention and the attention of the coaches he has built around him. At a campus of hundreds, the founder is a philosophy; at a boutique, he is on court.

Coaching model: assigned staff vs hand-picked coaches at 4:1

At any institution IMG's size, coaching works the way institutions work: a professional staff, with players assigned to coaches and groups by the academy, and assignments that can change as enrollment and staffing do. That is not a flaw — it is how a large school has to run — but it means the coach your child sees daily is chosen for you, and the ratio your child experiences follows enrollment.

At Saviano, training runs at a maximum 4:1 player-to-coach ratio, and every coach on staff was hand-selected and is mentored by Nick — so the philosophy on court is one philosophy, whichever coach is holding the basket. Individual development plans are designed by the founder, and the small roster means no player develops unnoticed. The trade-off is honest: a boutique cannot offer the facilities footprint, the sports-science department, or the multi-sport campus life. What it offers instead is certainty about the one thing families ask about most: who, exactly, is coaching my child.

Living: dorms vs a home

IMG is a boarding school — dorms, dining halls, residential supervision, the full campus experience. For families abroad or far away, that completeness is a genuine solution, and some teenagers love the independence of it.

Saviano is a day academy: players live at home, families relocate to South Florida, or international players live with vetted host families in Davie. The player trains like a professional and then goes home to a family dinner table — which we consider a developmental feature, not a compromise, especially for younger teenagers. Which living model suits your child is a real decision in its own right; our guide to boarding school vs day academy treats it properly.

School: on-campus vs accredited online partners

IMG runs its own on-campus school — classrooms, teachers, and classmates in one place, the traditional boarding-school package. Saviano pairs training with accredited online academics through its education partners, Laurel Springs and ICL Academy, scheduled around morning or afternoon training blocks. The online model asks more self-management of the student and gives back flexibility — for tournament travel, for training loads, and for pacing school to the student rather than the bell.

The college pathway: a network vs a coach's phone

IMG owns NCSA, the college-recruiting network, which gives its athletes an institutional pipeline into college athletics of enormous breadth — a real, structural advantage at scale.

Saviano's pathway runs through direct coach relationships: college coaches recruit players Nick and his staff put in front of them, with a personal read on the player behind every conversation. The record is the argument — every college-track player the academy has developed has been placed on a university team, with alumni at Yale, Harvard, Duke, Stanford and Columbia. The full record is on our college placement page. One pathway is a system; the other is a relationship. Both demonstrably work.

Choose IMG if…

  • You want the total-immersion campus — school, housing, training and supervision in one institution — often because you live far away and need completeness more than customization.
  • Your child thrives in large competitive groups and self-advocates naturally.
  • You are a multi-sport family, or the player genuinely values training alongside athletes from other sports.
  • You want the traditional boarding-school experience — classmates, dorm life, campus independence — with elite sport built in.

Choose Saviano if…

  • Your priority is who coaches your child — a named coach, a guaranteed maximum ratio, and a development plan designed by the founder rather than assigned by a department.
  • Your child develops best under sustained individual attention — including the talented quiet kid who would never push to the front of a big group.
  • You want your child living in a home, not a dorm — yours, a relocated one, or a vetted host family's.
  • The goal is college tennis at a serious university, and you want the people guiding that pathway to know your child personally.

If you are leaning away from the campus model but IMG was your only reference point, the wider field is covered in our guide to IMG Academy alternatives — including the options that are neither IMG nor us.

Questions families ask

What is the main difference between Saviano and IMG?

Philosophy of scale. IMG is a multi-sport boarding institution — hundreds of athletes, on-campus school and dorms, an assigned coaching staff, and the NCSA recruiting network. Saviano is a coach-led boutique day academy — a maximum 4:1 ratio, every program designed by Nick Saviano, accredited online school, and players living at home or with vetted host families.

Is Saviano as good as IMG for college placement?

The pathways differ but both work. IMG offers institutional breadth through NCSA; Saviano places players through direct relationships between its coaches and college programs, and every college-track player the academy has developed has been placed on a university team — with alumni at Yale, Harvard, Duke, Stanford and Columbia.

Does Saviano offer boarding like IMG?

No — Saviano is deliberately a day academy. Players live at home, families relocate to South Florida, or international players live with vetted host families in Davie while completing accredited online school. Families who specifically want dorm-based boarding are looking at a different model, which is exactly the choice to settle first.

How should we decide between them?

Visit both and ask each the same questions: who will run my child's daily sessions, what is the real ratio at peak hours, who designs and reviews the individual development plan, and where did the last three years of players land. Then train a week where you can — a player's reaction on the drive home is the most reliable data you will collect.
